A Spool of Blue Thread

A Spool of Blue Thread: A novel - Anne Tyler

Anne Tyler's latest novel is on the Man Booker Prize longlist--announced about a week ago. I actually requested this book from the library about 6 months ago. It has a bit of a queue, being that it is also nominated for the Women's Prize.

This is the first Tyler I have read. And it is excellent. A family saga covering 3 generations, and I love family sagas.

This is different, however, in that it moves backward. First we meet the elderly Red and Abby, their adult children, and their grandchildren. We learn about their family, their wonderful house (built by Red's dad Junior), and their stories.

And then we meet the young Red and Abby, before they are a couple. We meet his parents and friends, and Abby's-then boyfriend and Red's sister. We learn more about the family--and not all of it matches!

And then we meet Junior and his wife, Linnie Mae. And we learn more about the house. And about how they met.

These characters are all wonderful--so real and all are flawed, despite what the family stories might say.
